Chapter Eight

“You don’t think Jared would hurt Brayden, do you?” Zoe was asking. It was the following morning, and Zoe had wasted no time pounding on the apartment door this morning so that she could question me all about the events that had transpired the night before. I had left out a few details—such as Brayden’s breakdown and my own that followed shortly after he’d left. It was difficult to hide the dark circles and swollen eyes from her, but she hadn’t said anything yet and I held onto hope that she would let it slide.

“What? Of course not.” I’d just mentioned my concern for Brayden. “I didn’t even say anything about Jared.”

“Well, no—but Jared’s the only vampire we know in the area—”

“Key phrase being we know. There could be countless more hanging around. Jared’s warned me several times about being careful on the streets—you never know what could be hiding in the shadows, Zoe.”

I heard the beep of the coffee pot, sounding that it was ready, and quickly rose to my feet. Zoe followed closely behind, much to my dismay. The lighting would be better in the kitchen—it would be harder to hide my eyes. “Besides, it’s not just here that I’m worried about. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before—the Masons are all just walking around Glover with no idea about what could find them—”

“What already did find them.” Zoe corrected, her voice very soft.

“Yes, but that was my fault.” I didn’t turn around to face her as I poured a cup of coffee. I didn’t even like the bitter substance, but it had become a required part of my diet upon moving here—until recently, that was. I’d been doing so well—even without Jared, I was still able to sleep at least a few hours. But last night had been pure torment.

“No it wasn’t, Luce.”

“Well, I’m fairly certain it was one of two things. Either they were looking for Darren—and Darren was there for me. Or they were there because of my mother. So, really—it was.” I took a long drink of the hot liquid, not even caring that it was burning my mouth. “But none of this is the point.” I turned to face her, meeting her eyes for the briefest of moments. “I was wondering if you could maybe—I don’t know; cast a spell of protection or something.”

“Seriously?” her tone was incredulous.

“Of course I’m serious.” I took the opportunity to glide by her, back into the living room. Zoe remained in the doorway between the kitchen and living room, turning to face me but not stepping forward.

“You have that much faith in me?”

“Why wouldn’t I? You cast the spell on that charm for this place and nothing’s happened to me yet.” I took another long drink from the mug.

“Well, it hasn’t exactly been tested. It’s not as if you’ve been in immediate danger.”

“You don’t know that. Maybe it’s working that well.”

“You really trust me that much?”

“Of course I do, Zoe.” I wasn’t sure why she would doubt that I did.
